She just never expected her protector to be the most dazzling man in England, a devilish scoundrel they call the Blue Bastard. Victoria has agreed to marry for duty, not love, but her unforeseen desire for her mystical angel threatens to destroy not only her plans for the future but the armor surrounding her susceptible heart.

A confirmed scoundrel, a mind reader, and the only man she desires…

Illegitimate son of a viscount and reigning king of London’s gossip sheets, Finn Alexander has spent a lifetime hiding his ability to read minds behind charming smiles and wicked behavior. As they embark on a journey of passion and friendship, Victoria and Finn must decide if they’re willing to risk everything for the promise of true, magical love.

Sneak Peek

My Thoughts:

This was the second book in the League of Lords series.  This one is Victoria and Finn’s story.  Finn and Victoria both have gifts just like the main characters in the first book.

I feel like the first book laid all of the groundwork for the series, which makes sense. However, I feel like I wanted more of the paranormal in this book. I also feel like I wanted more drama in this book similar to the first in the series.

There was also a lot of background information in this book that I did appreciate. I appreciated the fact that the reader learned more about the characters. I do recommend this series.

Release date: May 6, 2020

Synopsis:

In the first in Tracy Sumner’s sizzling League of Lords historical series, mysticism and paranormal abilities in Victorian England set the stage for a captivating love affair…

He’s a viscount with a dark past who yearns for the one woman he can’t have. She’s a psychic firebrand. Rebellious, spurned by society and determined to change his mind.

What’s a defiant woman to do when the man she’s meant for doesn’t believe in love?

After three years of waiting for Julian Alexander to realize they are destined to be together, Lady Piper Scott takes matters into her own hands. Because her gift as a healer has never done anything but distance her from the most principled man in England. A meaningless diversion as a medium, all done to gain a certain wandering viscount’s attention, backfires. As most endeavors have for a woman known in the ton as Scandalous Scott.

What’s a reluctant viscount to do when the woman he can’t have becomes the woman he can’t live without?

Julian Alexander, Lord Beauchamp, battled his way from the lowliest slum to assume his title. He carries not only a turbulent past, but a mystical psychic gift that separates him from society. Honorable to his core, he is committed to protecting a community of outcasts with abilities like his own. He has no time, no place, for love. Or repeatedly rescuing the most outrageous, beguiling woman he’s ever known. Even if she needs his protection most—and he desires her above all others.

Seduction, intrigue and desire lead to an explosive passion…

Julian vowed to shield Piper from the deadly foes seeking to possess her powerful gift. Although he needs her help in controlling his own, the mix could be deadly. Soon what was once a simple agreement to work together becomes enchantingly complex as they surrender to a timeless love…

Sneak Peek

My Thoughts:

This was the first book in the League of Lords series.  This one is Julian and Piper’s story.  Julian and Piper both have gifts so this story is a different kind of historical– a paranormal historical romance.

I liked the supernatural elements that were thrown in. I enjoyed the mix of characters. The main characters both bugged me at times, but I believe I was supposed to be bugged by them and their decisions.

This was the first time that I listened to a historical romance via audio. It took me a bit to get into this book because of this. I also think it took me a bit to get into this book because I did not understand the set up. I was a bit confused but I ended up understanding, for the most part, what was going on. I am excited to continue with the series and get to see the stories for other characters.

Mary, Will I Die?- Shawn Sarles

Thank you to Terminal Tours, the publisher, and the author for allowing me to be part of this blog tour!

Title: Mary, Will I Die?

Author: Shawn Sarkes

Release Date: September 7, 2021

Publisher: Scholastic Press

Genre: YA Paranormal Fantasy

Pages: 304

Rating: 3.5 stars

Synopsis:

Bestselling author Shawn Sarles’ most terrifying YA horror yet…

It starts innocently enough. Four kids – three girls, one boy – are at one of their houses, playing
games. One of them has read about “Bloody Mary” and the idea that if you look into a mirror
and say her name thirteen times, she will show you the future. Some legends say she’ll show
you your one true love or a skull to mark your death within five years. Others say that conjuring
Bloody Mary will bring her into your world.

Both sets of legends are true. The kids go through with the act, saying her name thirteen times.
One girl looks in the mirror and sees her longtime crush. One girl looks in the mirror and sees
the boy in the group. But she pretends to see something else. One girl looks in the mirror and
sees a girl she’s never seen before but can’t get out of her mind. And the boy . . . he sees a
skull. But he pretends to see something else. They try to laugh it off. And mostly they forget
about it. Or at least they don’t talk about it. Yes, over the next few years, whenever they look into
a mirror, it’s like there’s always another figure standing in the background, getting closer.
Just short of five years later, the four of them are no longer friends, having gone on separate
paths. The girl whose house it was has always tried to avoid the mirror they used – because she
always sensed someone in the background. One morning as she’s passing by, she sees much
more than her own reflection – it’s a scary figure taunting her. She startles and breaks the mirror.
When the pieces are put back together (barely), the figure is gone.

That day in school, a new girl arrives. Her name is Mary…

My Thoughts:

First of all, I have to say that I appreciate the messages sprinkled throughout the story. I appreciated the way in which each of the characters still continue to think about the game in the prologue. Some questioning what they saw more than others. But the whole story does revolve around these “visions”. I also appreciate the small time jump to allow time for the characters to get older and see the impact the “Bloody Mary” has had since that night.

Sometimes having 4 POVs can be very confusing for me, but this book did not confuse me. I appreciated being in each of their minds. Each character was completely different but still had a connection.

Now onto things that I slightly disliked. I disliked some of the romance plot. It just felt too pushed. The romance took away from the story. I don’t understand why this romance was in the book. I also don’t know if I would classify this book as horror. Some of scenes did give me goosebumps and make me have to take a break.. but I don’t know if I would classify this book as horror.

Overall, great book that had me in the mood for the spooky season!

Forestborn- Elayne Audrey Becker

Thank you to Terminal Tours, Tor, and the author for allowing me to be part of this blog tour!

Title: Forestborn

Author: Elayne Audrey Becker

Release Date: August 31, 2021

Publisher: Tor Teen

Pages: 368

Rating: 4 stars

Synopsis:

TO BE BORN OF THE FOREST IS A GIFT AND A CURSE.

Rora is a shifter, as magical as all those born in the wilderness–and as feared. She uses her abilities to spy for the king, traveling under different guises and listening for signs of trouble.

When a magical illness surfaces across the kingdom, Rora uncovers a devastating truth: Finley, the young prince and her best friend, has caught it, too. His only hope is stardust, the rarest of magical elements, found deep in the wilderness where Rora grew up–and to which she swore never to return.

But for her only friend, Rora will face her past and brave the dark, magical wood, journeying with her brother and the obstinate, older prince who insists on coming. Together, they must survive sentient forests and creatures unknown, battling an ever-changing landscape while escaping human pursuers who want them dead. With illness gripping the kingdom and war on the horizon, Finley’s is not the only life that hangs in the balance.

My Thoughts:

Forestborn is a beautiful introduction to a fantasy world. There is great world building and as the title suggests there is a “problem” with the forest. I also liked all the magical elements that are involved in this story.

The cast of characters brought the whole story together. This would be from the main character to all of the side characters throughout the story. I really connected with the main character Rora and the mentality that she has. I appreciated how throughout the story each of the three that we started to follow became more open and grew with each other.

I can’t exactly pinpoint what made this a 4 star and not a 5 for me. I think that some of the story just didn’t work for me. However, I will be reading more in this world because that ending has me waiting.

Title: You & Me at the End of the World

Publisher: Scholastic Press

Genre: Young Adult Contemporary or Dystopia

Pages: 368 pages

Rating: 3.5 stars

Synopsis:

Hannah Ashton wakes up to silence. The entire city around her is empty, except
for one other person: the reckless, charismatic Leo Sterling. Leo might be the
hottest boy ever (and not just because he’s the only one left), but he’s also too
charming, too selfish, and too devastating for his own good, let alone Hannah’s.
Stuck with only each other against a backdrop of abandoned carnivals and echoing museums, Hannah
and Leo explore a world with no parents, no friends, and no school. Together, they get a chance to start
over and be themselves instead of playing parts others cut out for them. Hannah doesn’t have to be justan overachieving, music-box-perfect ballerina, and Leo can be more than a slacker, 80s-glam-metal-
obsessed guitarist. Leo is a burst of honesty and fun that draws Hannah out, and Hannah’s got Leo thinking about someone other than himself for the first time.
Together, they search for answers amid crushing isolation. But while their empty world may appear
harmless . . . it’s not. Because nothing is quite as it seems, and if Hannah and Leo don’t figure out what’s
going on, they might lose each other—or lose whatever it is that’s building between them—forever.
This epic will-they-won’t-they relationship is a totally fresh and irreverent YA novel that is as much a love
story as it is a story about finding yourself. The book also contains a MAJOR twist that will have readers’
jaws on the floors long after turning the final page.

My Thoughts:

This is a very unique story. It made me think about what I would do myself if there was nobody around.

What I liked was that Hannah and Leo had a unique relationship. I liked the build throughout the story. This book is written in Hannah and Leo’s point of view which I enjoyed as you got the different viewpoints. There is some suspense and romantic tension as well as self-discovery.

I just think that it was missing something. I wish the characters had proper character developments as I felt they lacked in it. It was more like the characters were having fun by themselves until the end of the book. I wanted more of realistic development. I would have liked more questions answered as well.

I recommend this book because it has a great relationship and a great build up. The tension is everything. It is a decent young adult contemporary/dystopia.

Author Bio:

“I wrote YOU & ME AT THE END OF THE WORLD long before there was any hint of this pandemic,
because the image of a girl walking down an empty 12-lane highway
was so fascinating and foreign to me. Too bad we all know what empty
streets look like now,” said Brianna Bourne. “At the beginning, Hannah
and Leo wake up miles away from each other, both convinced they’re
the only ones left in the city. And then they find each other. And
everything changes.”

When BRIANNA BOURNE is not writing, she works as a stage manager

My Thoughts:

This book was addicting to read. I read the first one in this series in a day and this one took two days to read (if I didn’t have to work both jobs it would’ve taken one). I will definitely read the next.

Luca and Ama’s relationship was the sweetest and I loved seeing the continuation of this. This book also jumped right into where the first book left off. This book is compared to The Princess Bride, which I have never seen, but after reading this book I want to see it to compare the two. I loved the word building and the politics. The plot and pacing were also what kept me engaged. The only thing that kept me from giving this book 5 stars was that it was not something that I have not seen or read before. I still would highly recommend.

This is a great YA fantasy. It is everything that you would want from a sequel.

Ascenders- C.L. Gaber

Thank you Terminal Tours for allowing me to be part of the tour!

Title: Ascenders

Author: C.L. Gaber

Rating: 3.5 stars

Synopsis:

Walker Callaghan doesn’t know what happened to her. One minute she was living her teenage life in suburban Chicago…and the next minute, she was in a strange place and in a brand new school with absolutely no homework, no rules, and no consequences.

Walker Callaghan, 17, is dead.

She doesn’t go to heaven or hell. She lands at The Academy, a middle realm where teenagers have one thing in common: They were the morning announcement at their high schools because they died young.

These high school kids are now caught in a strange “in-between” zone where life hasn’t changed very much. In fact, this special teen limbo looks a lot like life in a quaint Michigan town complete with jocks, popular girls and cliques. “There are even cheerleaders in death,” Walker observes. It’s not a coincidence that the music teacher is a guy named Kurt who “used to have this band.” The drama teacher, Heath, is crush worthy because back in his life, he starred in some superhero movie.

Principal King explains the rules — there are none. Why? You can’t die twice.

There is no homework.

No tests.

No SATS.

You’re just there to learn because the human brain isn’t fully formed until you’re 24.

By the way, you can’t get hurt physically, so race your Harley off that hillside. But falling in love is the most dangerous thing you can do …because no one knows how long you’ll stay in this realm or what’s next.

My Thoughts:

This book was creative and imaginative. A look into the afterlife. A main character who does not know what happened. Do I need to say more?

We become a part of the world and really get to know the main character. Walker is a typical high school girl or could you call her typical when she is in the in-between? I appreciated her growth as a character and I would like to see where this growth takes her.

Last Gate of the Emperor- Kwame Mbalia and Prince Joel Makonnen

Title: Last Gate of the Emperor

Authors: Kwame Mbalia and Prince Joel Makonnen

Pub. Date: May 4th, 2021

Page Count: 304 pages

Rating: 3.5 stars

Today I am so excited to be part of the Last Gate of the Emperor Tour! Thank you to Terminal Tours and the authors!

Synopsis:

Yared Heywat lives an isolated life in Addis Prime — a hardscrabble city with rundown tech, lots of rules, and not much to do. His worrywart Uncle Moti and bionic lioness Besa are his only family… and his only friends.

Often in trouble for his thrill-seeking antics and smart mouth, those same qualities make Yared a star player of the underground augmented reality game, The Hunt for Kaleb’s Obelisk. But when a change in the game rules prompts Yared to log in with his real name, it triggers an attack that rocks the city. In the chaos, Uncle Moti disappears.

Suddenly, all the stories Yared’s uncle told him as a young boy are coming to life, of kingdoms in the sky and city-razing monsters. And somehow Yared is at the center of them.

Together with Besa and the Ibis — a game rival turned reluctant ally — Yared must search for his uncle… and answers to his place in a forgotten, galaxy-spanning war.

My Thoughts:

I binge read this book in one sitting. This book is action packed with a great futuristic world. The main character, Yared, was a well written character.

Yared was a great point of view to follow throughout this story. He goes on a journey in multiple ways. I also enjoyed the game element that the author’s added into the story. Lastly, the two younger characters were believable, with some of their actions being some that a child at that age would make.

This book has a great engagement to the plot. There are several worlds and action packed scenes. I appreciated how technology was included in this world. It was advanced, however it was believable. The authors took the time to explain most of the technology involved, which is something that younger readers may need in order to grasp the concept.

I also appreciated the relationships in this book. This book has friendships as well as family relationships. I appreciated that some of the plot built on these relationships. The connections to the characters were there and hit me in the feels.

This being said, there were a few negatives to this book. I found bits of this book to be confusing. I felt as though some of the descriptions could’ve been more vivid. I also felt at times that there were references that were just dropped in and not explained entirely. I just felt that there should’ve been more explanations to make it less confusing for the reader.
